Hello all,
Im wanting to purchase a pistol for home protection. i probably wouldn't be carrying it, it would just stay under my bed next to the shotgun. the shotgun is a very nice weapon for self defense, especially when used at 2:15am and you don't want to take the time to aim that carefully at the guy bursting through your bedroom door--but im wanting a pistol too... just for the sake of it. two things that i want in the purchase are high magazine capacity and outstanding take-down power. from just a few days on the interwebs, i have come up with a couple choices under $800 that look atractive from that standpoint. i would LOVE some input on these choices, and other ones that you would recomend. i have also included the things that i like about each. 1. MAC-10/11 --.45, nice stopping power --30rd+ capacity --super cheap, even with lifetime warrantey 2. AK Pistol --mud gun, very difficult to screw up. --cheap ammo (nato for the win) --super high capacity, with drum mags for sale i have heard horror stories about the accuracey or both of these guns, but accuracey is not a factor that i am going to have to deal with if all that i am wnating to do with the gun is shoot accross my bedroom with it, right? the MAC's, i have heard problems about the original ones jamming. i have also heard, though, that the new manufacturers have addressed this issue. The AK, i know, has gone through major revisions over the years, and i need to learn more about each generation and company that they have been produced under. i know that many of the middle-eastern versions are poorer quality, too. but with the $800-ish budget, i am fairly confidnt in my ability to find a decent one--am i correct n saying this? What have your experiences been with the AK's? I know that it is the firearm of choice that many nations use that we have gone to war against. i have heard from other soldiers that the caliber and ruggedness of the weapon makes it a superior choice over the m16 in urban combat, where long-distance shooting (100+ yards) is not neccessary. i would love to hear some of your thoughts on the gun, as well. idealy, i love the HK's. but the mp5 and the other beautiful sub-guns that they make are really just out of my price range. some knock-off's may be in my price range, but im worried about the quality. does anyone here know anything about them? the fully auto ones are difficult for my to get as a civilian. i would need to do the $200 class 3 transfer to make it legal, putting the already multi-thousand dollar price just that much further out of my grasp. god bless!

The HK's are beautiful guns... I woudl either get one of them or a Glock... they are pretty reliable pistols... I have owned two of them and never once had any issues with them...

I personally own an HK USP .40. I would recommend that, but I believe that its a bit more than the $800 your wanting to spend, but so worth it. Glock is also nice if you are a civilian police officer for the simple fact that most officers use them as well...in a fire-fight you can use others mags. Other than that, I personally dont like Glocks. Go to a gunshop and try a few out. I also recommend Sigs, either the P223 or P226 depending on your hand size.
Maybe im a bad person to ask which guns to buy...I seem to always suggest ones on the more expensive side. I guess you get what you pay for...imo.

The glock is nice, and that is what i will get for a concealed carry when i get the CCP. but for home protection, size is not an issue. and that is why i said that magazine capacity was a must. im in the market for 30+ rounds. so, something high-cap or drum-feed. Quote:
dude, i would love to talk with you about your experience with your USP!! it is by far my favorite, and i will own one...just as soon as i get myself out of school and sitting behind a desk. let me look into Sig, that is a company that i havnt looked into before, thanks for the info and recomendation!!! is the p223 a .233 round? Rex, i looked into the sig! they have some nice 45's like the ones you suggested, and beautifully made. not the magazine capacity of the mac or ak, but i will have to consider them as a cary weapon.
thanks for the recomendation. someone else mentioned one today, the Vector Arms V51 (which aparently uses an HK housing, but is put together by Vector....). it shoots a 308 rifle round (bigger than the 30cal AK round, woohoo!!), making it extremely atractive under the above-mentioned qualities that i am looking for in this next purchase. being a rifle housing, high-cap mags are availible. it comes with 20 round mags, but im sure it cant be hard to find 30 or even a drum. but, the price is high. they start at 1K. i wonder if i can find a used one... here's a link, let me see if i can code tag the link. i know how to do it on my forum... click here...woo hoo!! it worked on yours, too!! go php!!

ya-- wonderful quality, absurd knock-down power for a pistol, but other people seem to like this gun just as much as i want it. they aren't selling used ones....
the new ones seem to go for around $1,000 even, which is just a little out of my price range.... i wish i could find a used one, that would bring it just within my price range... but the people who can afford these beauteys just don't seem to want to give them up!!

I'm a 12 gauge type of person. You'll kill them with just the site of it. Plus you spelled firearm wrong so I think you'll need gun lessons first before buying.
